Wootton Basset Town Council are hosting a D-Day 80th Anniversary event that we are hosting on Thursday 6th June 2024 from 6.30pm – 9.30pm, at Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Football Club, Ballard’s Ash, Malmesbury Road, Royal Wootton Bassett, SN4 8DS.
This is a FREE Community outdoor event for all the family to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.
41 Degrees will be headlining the event, also featuring The Wessex Male Choir, and Cantanti Choir. Scarrotts will have a small selection of fairground attractions for the children, there will be vintage cars on display. Drinks will be available to purchase from the Rugby club’s mobile bar.
The food available to purchase will be lovely fish and chips, for a very specific reason. This is a nod to the significant role fish and chips played to ensure the safety of our troops on foreign soil. Soldiers aware of others in the vicinity, and not knowing if friend or foe, called out ‘Fish’. If the response was ‘Chips’ he was certain the unseen person was a friend. It is also National Fish and Chips Day!
The lighting of the Beacon is taking place throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories and will be lit at 9.15pm, which is when we will be lighting ours after a tribute is read by the mayor.
Wiltshire Council is running an online survey gathering information about what local people feel are the important themes and priorities for their area. The short survey asks people to choose their key themes and then, for their top three, tell us further detail about those issues. It shouldn’t take any longer than 10mins to complete.
The responses we get back will help to inform Wiltshire Council’s planning for the coming years and also help to shape RWB&C Area Board’s priorities for the coming year. We really want to hear about the issues that are important to local people so we can channel resources into making changes where they’re wanted.
It’s available for the next two weeks and will close on 7th May: https://surveys.wiltshire.gov.uk/s/ad7x4r
It’s the time of year for us to give the village a spring clean.
Meet at the Village Hall from 10am for a village tidy and litter pick up. We will be providing litter picker tongs, gloves, bin bags and Hi-Viz vests to teams of willing helpers. We are also looking for volunteers with spades/shovels and buckets to weed the pavements.
~ There will be bacon butties / refreshments provided as a reward! ~
